PREFACE

TT is with pleasure that this, the forty-eighth issue of the Natal Directory is^pTacSr1 before the public.

Although conditions arising out' of the r;\nkl'y- changing face of the Province of Natal and the vast industrial and commercial expansion of its major cities have made the production of Directories extremely difficult, the revisions of every section have been attended to with the same scrupulous care and energy as in previous issues. The volume commences with information concerning Durban and proceeds to Pietermaritzburg and the Towns and Villages of Natal, Zululand, East Griqualand and Pondoland. General information concerning such matters as the Constitution of the Union and Government and Provincial Departments comes at the end of the book. An Index appears in the front of the book.

Reference to the classified list of Industries will indicate the wide develop¬ ment that is taking place in the Industrial life of Natal.

Critics are reminded that it is necessary for a work of this nature to go to press long before the end of the year, and that, obviously, changes which have taken place while the MS. is in the printers’ hands cannot always be reflected in the Directory.

We take this opportunity of acknow¬ ledging the courteous assistance which has been so generously accorded by the various Government and Provin¬ cial Departments and by correspon¬ dents in outlying districts. Our final acknowledgments are due to the advertisers, without whose assistance it would be impossible to attempt the production of a reliable Directory to sell at a reasonable price.

DURBAN,

January, 1950.

DURBAN MUNICIPALITY

6

DURBAN.

Durban, situated on the seaboard of the Indian Ocean on the East Coast of Southern Africa, is the third largest City in the Union of South Africa, and is the principal Port of the African Continent, South of the Equator.

The history of the European settlement may he said to date from 1823 when Lieutenant F. G. Farewell (R.N.), John S. King, and Henry Francis Fynn landed from the trading brig “Salisbury.” This triumvirate, returning in 1824 with a small party of adventurous pioneers, founded the first European settle¬ ment in Natal.

In 1835 the settlement was laid out as a township and named D’Urban in honour of Sir Benjamin D’Urban, the then Governor of the Cape Colony. Durban was incorporated as a Municipality in 1854 with a population of 1,204, and until 1932 the Municipal area was only 12 square miles. The outlying areas of South Coast Junction (Clairwood and Rossburgh), Umhlatuzana, Mayville, Sydenham, Umgeni, Greenwood Park, Red Hill and Durban North were incor¬ porated into the “Borough of Durban” in 1932, and the total municipal area increased to 67 square miles.

On August 1, 1935, the “Borough of Durban” became the “City of Durban” the achievement of civic stature epitomising a hundred years of progress. The civic motto aptly illustrates this rapid expansion from Settle¬ ment to City, and the City Fathers showed prophetic vision in the choosing of the inscription, “Debile Principum Melior Fortuna Sequetur” Better fortune will follow a difficult beginning for the City’s stately Coat of Arms.

The following statistics concerning the Municipality of Durban are of interest:

NATAL DIRECTORY

The Port of Durban handles more than half of the Union’s total export and import trade. It deals with more cargo in a year than all the other South African ports put together. With its excellent docking facilities and first-class services, the port handles upwards of 5,000,000 tons of cargo annually. These features will be of interest:

Nearly 1,000,000 square feet of shed and storage accommodation with a capacity of more than 8,000,000 cubic feet.

A pre-cooling store with a capacity of 1,800 shipping tons for the fruit export trade.

A 42,000-ton grain elevator capable of shipping at a rate of 1,000 tons an hour.

A Graving Dock capable of taking some of the largest ships afloat. The dock is 1,150 feet long, 110 feet wide at the entrance, and 35 feet deep at low tide.

The Bluff wharves are equipped with modern electrically driven coaling appliances which handle 2,000,000 tons of coal a year.

Oil fuelling facilities and dry docicing services of a high order.

Six powerful tugs fitted with wireless and modern salvage and fire appliances.

Durban must be ranked as unique among the cities of the world. For it is that modern paradox, a Garden City with an industrial tempo . . .; an all-year- round holiday resort, and yet a manufacturing centre, contributing materially towards the Union’s output.

The distance to Cape Town by sea is 812 miles; to Southampton 6,790; to Johannesburg by rail 494, and by road 417 miles. Air flying times: To Johannes¬ burg If hours, to East London 2 hours, Port Elizabeth 3s hours, Cape Town 6J hours.
